How to waive a U.S. Bank monthly fee

You get the monthly maintenance fee U.S. Bank prints for Smartly Checking, the ways that page says the fee can be $0, and a short list of questions. Asking U.S. Bank to remove a fee already charged is a request. U.S. Bank can say no. This page does not promise a waiver.

What this fee is

A monthly maintenance fee is a charge for the checking account. It is not a purchase and not a subscription. Match the account name on the statement. Smartly Checking and Safe Debit are different accounts. How fees show on a US statement separates a bank fee from a store charge.

The fee U.S. Bank prints

The Smartly Checking page and the Consumer Pricing Information list a $12 monthly maintenance fee for U.S. Bank Smartly Checking. Both say that fee is waived for the first two statement periods on a newly opened account.

After that, the Smartly page says most people keep the fee at $0 by meeting one of these: combined monthly direct deposits of $1,500 or more, an average account balance of $1,500 or more, being an owner of a U.S. Bank Smartly Visa Signature card, being an owner of an eligible U.S. Bank small business checking account, or qualifying for Smart Rewards Gold, Platinum, or Platinum Plus. The same page says members of the military who disclose that status, Workplace Financial Wellness Program customers, U.S. Bank Global Transition Solutions customers, clients age 13 to 24, and clients 65 and over pay no monthly maintenance fee.

The pricing sheet lists a separate Safe Debit account at $4.95 a month and says that monthly maintenance fee cannot be waived. Do not use the Smartly rules for a Safe Debit account. The sheet lists a $25 minimum opening deposit for Smartly Checking.

What to ask

Use the phone number on the statement. Have the date, the fee name, and the amount. Ask whether the account is Smartly Checking or Safe Debit, and which published condition U.S. Bank says was missed. Then ask U.S. Bank to review the fee or remove it. They can say no.

No. Smartly Checking lists $12, with the conditions above. The pricing sheet lists Safe Debit at $4.95 and says that fee cannot be waived.
Will U.S. Bank remove a monthly fee it already charged if I ask?
They might, and they might not. Asking is a request. Nothing on this page says the bank has to remove a fee already on the statement.

No. Expenvo can list a fee that is already on a statement. It does not know whether you will meet the bank's rule in the next period.
Does the first two months stay free forever?
No. U.S. Bank says the $12 fee is waived for the first two statement periods on a newly opened Smartly Checking account. After that, one of the published conditions has to be met.
