US bank monthly fee waivers for students

A student waiver is a rule on one named account. It is not a discount every bank gives, and it is not the fee on a parent's everyday checking account. This page is the monthly fee and the waiver each bank printed on the page opened for that row. Other fees, such as an ATM fee, can still apply.

The monthly fee and the student rule

Opened 20 October 2026. Match the account name. A different checking account at the same bank can cost a different amount. Everyday accounts that are not the student account are on monthly checking account fees by bank. The line on your own statement is the one that counts. Upload it on the upload page. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not sign in to the bank.

Opened 20 October 2026. Amounts are US dollars. One named account per row.
AccountMonthly fee the page printsWhat the same page says about students or age
Chase High School Checking$0For teens 13 to 17 at account opening, with a parent or guardian as a co-owner, and linked to that adult's qualifying Chase checking account. Chase says there is no monthly service fee. When the student turns 19, the account converts to Chase Total Checking.
Chase College Checking$0 or $15Chase says this account is no longer available for new account openings. For an account that is already open, the fee is $0 up to the expected graduation date given at opening (five years maximum), or with $500 or more in qualifying electronic deposits, or a $1,500 average ending day balance, or a link to a qualifying checking account. It is $15 if none of those is met.
Bank of America Advantage SafeBalance Banking$4.95, waived under 25The page says the $4.95 monthly maintenance fee is waived each statement cycle if an owner or the child on the account is under 25, or the minimum daily balance is $500 or more, or an owner is in Preferred Rewards at Preferred Plus, Preferred Honors, or Premier. Fiduciary accounts do not qualify for the under 25 rule. SafeBalance for Family Banking uses the same waiver.
Wells Fargo Clear Access Banking$5, or $0 at ages 13 to 24You can avoid the $5 monthly service fee each fee period if the primary account owner is 13 to 24, or with $250 or more in qualifying electronic deposits, or a qualifying military direct deposit. Age stops working as a waiver when the primary owner turns 25. Owners 13 to 16 need an adult co-owner.
PNC Virtual Wallet StudentNo monthly service charge for six yearsThe fee schedule opened at that address is marked effective 27 October 2024. It prints no monthly service charge for the first six years from account opening. PNC may ask for proof of enrollment. After six years the account converts to a Virtual Wallet and that account's service charges apply.
U.S. Bank Smartly Checking, ages 13 to 24$12, waived for ages 13 to 24The disclosure on the student page says clients age 13 to 24 pay no monthly maintenance fee. The same disclosure also waives the fee for the first two statement periods on a new account, and lists other waivers such as $1,500 in combined monthly direct deposits. The marketing line on that page says the $12 fee is waived for young adults and students 18 to 24. Use the disclosure when the two sentences differ.

What a waiver does not cover

A $0 monthly fee is not a promise that every other line is $0. The Chase College Checking fee page still prints a $3 non-Chase ATM withdrawal in the US and $5 outside the US, and it says the ATM owner can add a surcharge. Wells Fargo points from the waiver page to a separate quick view of ATM and other fees. PNC's student schedule is a longer list than the monthly service charge.

When the age or the enrollment period ends, the bank's page says the ordinary fee can start. Chase High School Checking converts at 19. Bank of America and Wells Fargo stop using age at 25. U.S. Bank's disclosure stops the age waiver outside 13 to 24. PNC converts after six years. If the statement already shows a monthly fee, the amount on the statement is what posted. Asking the bank to review it is a request. They can say no.

Questions

Does every US bank waive checking fees for students?
No. This page lists the accounts whose own pages printed a student or age rule on 20 October 2026. A different account at the same bank can still charge a monthly fee.
Can I still open Chase College Checking?
Chase's fee page says College Checking is no longer available for new account openings. High School Checking is the account that page's sibling describes for ages 13 to 17, with a $0 monthly service fee.
Does a $0 monthly fee remove ATM fees?
Not by itself. The monthly fee and the ATM fee are different lines. Read the ATM sentence on the same bank's fee page.
