How to ask about a Scotiabank Gold American Express annual fee

Scotiabank Gold American Express is a credit card, not the monthly fee on a Scotiabank bank account. The card page prints $120 a year for the primary card and $29 for each additional card. A package rebate is a separate offer with its own conditions. Asking Scotiabank to remove a fee already charged is a request.

The fee on the card page

Opened 19 October 2026. The Scotiabank Gold American Express card page prints an annual fee of $120 a year for the primary card and $29 a year for a supplementary card. The rates and fees note on that page says the current annual fee is $120 for the primary card and $29 for each additional card, including cards issued to co-borrowers and supplementary cardholders. The American Express comparison prints the same $120 and $29, a purchase interest rate of 21.99%, a cash advance rate of 22.99%, and a minimum credit limit of $5,000.

The card page also says you can apply with a minimum personal income of $12,000 a year, and that the cash advance rate applies to advances, balance transfers, and cash-like transactions. All of those figures are in Canadian dollars on a Canadian card. A Scene+ bonus is not the annual fee. Do not multiply the annual fee by 12. How to ask about a card annual fee is the general page. The monthly fee on a Scotiabank bank account is how to waive a Scotiabank monthly fee.

No foreign transaction fee is a different line

The card page says there is no foreign transaction fee, and that you do not pay the typical 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases in a foreign currency. The comparison page says the Gold card and the Platinum American Express card save 2.5% on foreign transaction fees. That is a statement that this card does not add that percent. It is not a statement that the $120 annual fee is $0.

A debit purchase from a bank account can show a different line, explained on what a cross border debit or FX fee line means. The percent other Canadian cards print is on foreign currency conversion fees by Canadian bank. If your statement shows a foreign transaction fee on this card, write the date and the amount and ask Scotiabank, because the public page says that fee is not charged.

What waived with an eligible bank account means

The glance box on the card page says the annual fee is waived with an eligible bank account. The offer text on the same page is more specific, and it is a rebate, not a blank promise. If you open an Ultimate Package on or after the account open date, Scotiabank says you receive an annual fee rebate of up to $150 on one eligible card you hold as the primary cardholder, for each year the package and the card stay open and in good standing. Gold American Express is named as an eligible card, along with Passport Visa Infinite, Passport Visa Infinite Privilege, Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite, and Scotiabank Value Visa. Each package gets one rebate. If the card fee is greater than the rebate, you pay the difference.

A Preferred Package rebate is narrower. Effective on and after 22 June 2026, Scotiabank says those clients receive a $40 annual fee rebate on one eligible card, starting on the first anniversary after that date, if at least $15,000 in qualifying purchases posted in the 12 monthly statement periods before the month the fee is charged, and if both the card and the package are open and in good standing. The same text says the first-year annual fee charged after that effective date is not eligible for this rebate. A $40 rebate does not, by itself, cover a $120 fee. The page says the rebate cannot be combined with another annual fee rebate or waiver, and that Scotiabank can change it.

An older help me choose page described a first-year primary fee waiver for cards issued between 31 October 2025 and 1 January 2026, and it printed a 20.99% purchase rate. That issue window is closed. The current card page prints 21.99% on purchases. Use the current card page, not the older help page, for the fee you expect next.

What to ask Scotiabank

Use the number on the statement if it is printed there. The card page says to call 1-888-882-8958 for current rates and fees. Have the date, the fee name, and the amount. Ask whether the account is the primary card or an additional card, because those fees differ. Then ask whether a package rebate applies, and ask Scotiabank to review a fee you think was charged in error. They can say no. This page has no success rate.

The card page does not print a menu for switching Gold American Express to the no-fee Scotiabank American Express card. The comparison page does print that other card at $0 a year. Asking to switch is a request, and it may be a new application. This page does not tell you to close the card. A fee that already posted is discussed in general on can you get a credit card annual fee refunded when you cancel. Read your own agreement before you rely on a US refund window.

Questions

Is every Scotiabank American Express card $120 a year?
No. The comparison page prints $0 for the Scotiabank American Express card, $120 for Gold, and $399 for Platinum. Supplementary fees on that page are $0, $29, and $99. Match the card name.
Does an Ultimate Package make the Gold fee $0?
The card page says the fee is waived with an eligible bank account, and the offer text describes a rebate of up to $150 on one eligible primary card while the package and the card stay open and in good standing. If the fee is higher than the rebate, you pay the difference. Confirm the rebate on your statement.
Does the Preferred Package rebate cover the full $120?
The page prints a $40 rebate, and only after the conditions, including $15,000 in qualifying purchases and an anniversary after 22 June 2026. It also says the first-year fee charged after that date is not eligible. $40 does not equal $120.
Will Scotiabank remove a fee it already charged if I ask?
They might, and they might not. Asking is a request. Nothing on this page says Scotiabank has to waive a fee already on the statement.
