US overdraft fees by bank
These amounts are copied from each bank's own fee page. The pages were opened on 16 October 2026. A bank that is not in the table was left out because its fee page was not opened, or it did not print a number. Your account name has to match the row. A different account at the same bank can have a different fee.

What the pages print
An overdraft fee is a charge when the bank pays an item and the account does not have enough money. A returned item fee, when the bank sends the payment back, is a different line. The table uses the words on each bank's page.
For a one time debit card purchase and an ATM withdrawal, a US bank generally needs you to opt in before it can charge an overdraft fee. That rule is Regulation E. How to ask about an overdraft fee explains it. The dollar amounts below are still the ones each bank prints for the accounts named.
| Account | Fee the page prints | What the same page also says |
|---|---|---|
| Chase Total Checking | $34 | Per transaction during nightly processing, beginning with the first that overdraws the account by more than $50. Maximum of 3 fees per business day, up to $102. $0 if you are overdrawn by $50 or less at the end of the business day, or if you bring the overdraft to $50 or less by the end of the next business day. No fee if the transaction is declined or returned unpaid, or if it is $5 or less. |
| Bank of America, other than the accounts in the next row | $10.00 | Overdraft Item Fee, each item, and not more than 2 overdraft items per day. Not charged when the item is declined or returned unpaid, on an everyday non-recurring debit card transaction or an ATM transaction, on an item authorized when the account had enough money, on an item of $1 or less or that overdraws the account by $1 or less, or on an account with the Decline All setting. |
| Bank of America Advantage SafeBalance Banking, SafeBalance Banking for Family Banking, and Advantage Savings | No Overdraft Item Fees | The personal schedule of fees says these accounts do not have Overdraft Item Fees. |
| Wells Fargo Everyday Checking | $35 | Per item when the checking account, or accounts linked for Overdraft Protection, cannot cover the transaction. No fee on items of $10 or less. No fee if both the ending daily balance and the available balance are overdrawn by $10 or less. No more than three fees per business day. No fee on items returned for non-sufficient funds. No fee on ATM and everyday debit card transactions unless you are enrolled in Debit Card Overdraft Service. The quick view is marked CNS2016ED, effective 7/28/2026. |
| Citi, the checking tiers on the compare page | No overdraft fee | The compare page prints No Overdraft or Returned Item Fees for the everyday, Citi Priority, and Citigold tiers. The footnote says Citibank will not charge you an overdraft fee. It also says Citibank may still return or pay an item when there is not enough money. |
What this page does not say
U.S. Bank, PNC, Capital One, Truist, Huntington, Citizens, and Regions are not in the table. Their fee pages were not opened for this check, so no number from memory is printed here. Wells Fargo Clear Access Banking is also left out. The Everyday Checking page says overdraft fees are not applicable to that account, and this table does not copy a second product's schedule.
Asking the bank to remove a fee already on the statement is a request. The bank can say no. How to find bank fees on a US statement shows where the line sits.
Questions
- Is every US overdraft fee $34 or $35?
- No. On 16 October 2026, Chase Total Checking printed $34, Wells Fargo Everyday Checking printed $35, and Bank of America printed a $10.00 Overdraft Item Fee on the accounts that have one. Citi's compare page said it will not charge an overdraft fee.
- Does Bank of America charge $10 on every account?
- No. The schedule says Advantage SafeBalance Banking, SafeBalance Banking for Family Banking, and Advantage Savings do not have Overdraft Item Fees.
- Why are some large banks missing?
- A bank is in the table only when its own fee page was opened and printed a number. The others were left out.
- Does opting out remove a fee already charged?
- The CFPB page linked from the overdraft guide does not say the bank has to remove a fee already on the statement. Opting out changes future debit card and ATM coverage under Regulation E.
