How to waive a TD monthly account fee

You get the published rules for named TD accounts, the words to look for on a statement, and a short list of questions for the phone or the bank's own message tools. TD Bank in the United States and TD Canada Trust in Canada are different banks with different accounts. A balance or deposit that skips the fee on one account can do nothing on another. Asking TD to remove a fee already charged is a request. TD can say no. This page does not promise a waiver.

What this fee is

A monthly account fee, also called a monthly maintenance fee or a monthly plan fee, is a charge from the bank for the account itself. It is not a store purchase, not a subscription, and not a refund. A refund is money back. It is not a new expense.

Other TD charges sit on their own lines. An overdraft fee, an NSF fee (not enough money), an extra transaction fee, and a paper statement fee are not the monthly account fee. How to ask about an overdraft fee is the page for that separate charge.

If you heard that the balance needed to skip the fee changed, match the account name on your statement to the current TD page for that account. The figures below are the ones on those pages. This guide does not keep a history of older amounts. Your account agreement controls the fee, not a post and not this page.

United States: TD Bank checking

These amounts are in US dollars. They come from TD Bank's checking account comparison. A different TD Bank account can have a different fee. The Personal Account Maintenance Information grid is the longer fee sheet.

TD Beyond Checking lists a $25 monthly maintenance fee. TD says you can waive it with one of these. One: $5,000 or more in direct deposits within a statement cycle. Two: a $2,500 minimum daily balance. Three: a $25,000 minimum daily combined balance across eligible TD accounts you ask TD to link. TD says that combined balance can include deposit accounts, home equity loans and home equity lines of credit in good standing, and mortgages in good standing. TD says it excludes credit cards and personal loans.

TD Complete Checking lists a $15 monthly maintenance fee. TD says you can waive it with one of these. One: $500 or more in direct deposits within a statement cycle. Two: a $500 minimum daily balance. Three: a $5,000 minimum daily combined balance across personal deposit accounts you ask TD to link. Four: the primary account holder is 17 through 23 years old. TD says that on the primary holder's 24th birthday the fee applies unless another waiver on that account is met.

TD Essential Banking lists a $4.95 monthly maintenance fee. The comparison page says there is no monthly maintenance fee when the primary account holder is 13 through 17. TD says that on the 18th birthday the fee applies. That page does not list a balance or a direct deposit that removes the Essential Banking fee. If you are under 18, TD says the account is opened jointly with a parent or legal guardian.

A statement cycle is the period TD uses for that account. It is not always a calendar month. The comparison page does not define which deposits count as direct deposits. Read the account guide before you rely on a deposit. A Zelle payment, a check, or a transfer from another person may not count. If the page does not say, ask TD.

Canada: TD Canada Trust chequing

These amounts are in Canadian dollars. They come from TD Canada Trust's bank accounts and fees table for Canadian dollar chequing. A US dollar account at TD Canada Trust is a different table on that same page. Do not use the Canadian dollar figures for it. Monthly fees at large Canadian banks also lists the TD Minimum Chequing fee next to other banks.

TD says you avoid the monthly fee on select chequing accounts by keeping the minimum balance at the end of every day of the month. The balance is checked each day. If it drops below the minimum, TD says you are charged the monthly fee. That is not the same rule as a US statement cycle, and it is not an average balance.

TD All-Inclusive Banking Plan lists $30.95 a month, or $0 with a minimum daily balance of $6,000. For seniors over 60, the same table lists $22.45, or $0 when the minimum daily balance is maintained. TD Unlimited Chequing lists $17.95, or $0 with $4,000. For seniors over 60 it lists $11.95, or $0 when the minimum daily balance is maintained. TD Every Day Chequing lists $11.95, or $0 with $3,000. For seniors over 60 it lists $8.20, or $0 when the minimum daily balance is maintained. The rebate row on that table is $6,000, $4,000, and $3,000 for those three accounts.

That fee table does not list a direct deposit that removes the monthly fee on All-Inclusive, Unlimited, or Every Day. Direct deposit is a published waiver on the US checking accounts above. It is not listed as the waiver for these Canadian dollar packages.

TD Minimum Chequing lists $3.95. The table says there is no minimum balance rebate on this account. It lists $0 if you receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement, are a beneficiary of a Registered Disability Savings Plan, are Indigenous Peoples from Canada, or are a newcomer in the first year in Canada. For seniors over 60, the table lists $0 if you receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement. It does not list $0 for every person over 60.

The TD Student Chequing Account lists a $0 monthly fee and no minimum balance rebate. TD says you keep that account with no monthly fee until age 23, and after 23 with proof of enrollment in full-time post-secondary education. The fee table also lists the student monthly fee as $0. ATM fees and other service fees on that page are separate from the monthly fee.

Every Day includes 25 transactions a month, plus unlimited public transit transactions, then $1.25 for each transaction over that. Minimum includes 12 transactions, of which up to 2 can be in a branch or by EasyLine telephone banking, plus unlimited public transit, then $1.25 after that. Those extra transaction fees are not the monthly plan fee. How fees show on a Canadian statement keeps the plan fee and the extra lines apart.

Find the fee on the statement

Read the account name first. Then look for a line named monthly maintenance fee, monthly service fee, monthly account fee, or plan fee. Write the date, the printed name, and the amount. A US TD Bank statement stays in USD. A TD Canada Trust statement in Canadian dollars stays in C$. How to read a statement PDF separates fees, purchases, payments, and refunds.

If TD later credits the fee back, that credit is money returned. It is not a new expense, and it is not a subscription. Do not put the monthly fee on a subscription list.

A fee charged every month for 12 months is that amount times 12. The result is arithmetic. It is not a quote from TD, and it is not money TD has agreed to return. Do not multiply a one time courtesy credit by 12 and treat it as a monthly bill.

What to ask TD

Use the phone number on the statement if it is printed there. In the United States, TD Bank's contact page lists 1-888-751-9000 for general help, and it says you can log in to the TD Bank app and use TD ASAP. In Canada, TD Canada Trust's contact page lists 1-866-222-3456 for English account help. The same page says you can message a person in EasyWeb after you open a chequing account and choose the messaging icon, and that you can use Contact Us, then Call Us, then Accounts in the TD app. TD says that app call feature works when you are physically in Canada. Hours and menus can change. If a number on your statement disagrees with this page, use the statement.

Have the date, the fee name, and the amount. Ask which account package is on the account. Ask which waiver TD says applies: minimum balance, direct deposit, age, student proof, or a listed rebate such as the Guaranteed Income Supplement. Ask whether one day below the minimum caused this month's fee. Then ask TD to review the fee or remove it. They can say no. This page has no success rate, because a made up rate would be a guess.

If the answer is no, ask what would have to be true in the next period for the fee to be $0, and ask for the bank's complaint steps. For a Canadian account, start with TD, then the outside office the bank names. Canadian bank fees explains that path. For a US account, you can also send a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau after you have TD's answer. US bank fees links that step. Expenvo does not file the complaint.

Upload a statement in Expenvo to see the bank fee lines it recognizes, listed on their own. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo does not call TD, and it does not promise the fee will be removed.

Questions

Are the US and Canadian TD monthly fees the same?
No. TD Bank checking in the United States and TD Canada Trust chequing in Canada are different accounts, in different currencies, with different waiver rules. Match the account name on your statement before you use a figure from this page.
Does a minimum balance always remove the fee?
No. It depends on the account. TD Canada Trust says the balance has to be at or above the listed minimum at the end of every day of the month, and that one day below it means the monthly fee is charged. TD Minimum Chequing and the student account do not list a balance rebate. TD Essential Banking in the US does not list a balance waiver on the comparison page.
Does direct deposit waive a TD Canada Trust monthly fee?
The TD Canada Trust fee table does not list direct deposit as the way to remove the monthly fee on All-Inclusive, Unlimited, or Every Day. Those three list a minimum daily balance. Direct deposit is a published waiver on TD Beyond Checking and TD Complete Checking in the United States.
Will TD remove a fee it already charged if I ask?
They might, and they might not. Asking is a request. Nothing on this page says TD has to waive a fee already on the statement.
Can Expenvo tell me the fee will be $0 next month?
No. Expenvo can list a bank fee that is already on a statement. It does not know whether you will meet TD's rule in the next period.
