Credit card fees by bank (Canada)
Canadian issuers do not all print a late fee in dollars. Some raise the interest rate after missed payments instead. This page uses one named document per bank, opened 16 October 2026. A different card from the same bank can print a different number. American Express Canada is not in the table.

What each bank prints
Opened 16 October 2026. Each row is one named agreement or offer, not every card from that issuer. Where a page does not print a dollar, the cell says so. Do not fill that cell from an older brochure.
Cash-like purchases and when interest starts are on cash advance fees and interest. Promotional balance transfer percents are on balance transfer fees.
| Document | Missed or late payment | Over the limit | Cash advance fee | Returned payment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RBC, How to Read Your Credit Card Statement | This page does not print a late fee dollar | This page does not print an overlimit dollar. It does not apply to RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege, that card for Private Banking, or if you reside in Quebec | $3.50 for the in-Canada cash withdrawals, bill payments or transfers to another RBC account, standard-rate balance transfers, and cash-like transactions the page lists, unless it is a promotional-rate balance transfer or the page says otherwise | Not printed on this page |

American Express Canada is not in the table
Amex Canada cardmember agreements point funds-advance fees to the information box and the disclosure statement, and they do not print the dollar amount. The public Amex Canada fees article opened on 16 October 2026 does not print a dollar late fee, cash advance fee, overlimit fee, or returned payment fee. A corporate Express Cash fee is a corporate card, so it is not used here.
Questions
- Do these banks all charge a late fee in dollars?
- The RBC, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC, and TD documents in the table do not print a late fee dollar. BMO, CIBC, and the TD Cash Back Visa Infinite box print a higher interest rate after missed payments. Scotiabank and the others print returned-payment or dishonoured-payment amounts instead.
- Why is American Express Canada missing?
- The public Amex Canada fees article opened on 16 October 2026 does not print those dollar fees, and the cardmember agreements point the amounts to a disclosure that was not a dollar figure on the pages opened.
- Is the TD row every TD card?
- No. It is the TD Cash Back Visa Infinite application information box opened on 16 October 2026. That box does not print an effective date. A different TD card can print different numbers.
- Does a Quebec address change these fees?
- Several rows say a fee does not apply to Quebec residents. That sentence is only where the bank's own page prints it. Do not assume it for a fee the page does not mark that way.
