Early account closing fees at US banks
An early account closing fee is a charge for closing a deposit account a short time after you opened it. Some banks print one. Some schedules do not mention it. Silence on a fee schedule is not the same as a printed $0.

What the opened pages print
Opened 16 October 2026. The account agreement controls. A bonus offer can also require you to keep an account open. That is separate from a closing fee. Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device.
| Document | What it prints about closing |
|---|---|
| M&T Bank, closing a checking or savings account | An early close-out fee may apply if you close within six months of opening. The page does not print the dollar. It says to read the account terms. |
| Fifth Third deposit account rules | You agree to pay any fees for the closure of the account in line with the fee schedule for that account. This rules PDF does not print the dollar. |
| Chase additional banking services and fees | The fee schedule does not print an early account closing fee. |
| Bank of America personal schedule of fees | The schedule, marked 08/2026, does not print an early account closing fee. |
| Truist personal deposit accounts fee schedule | The schedule dated September 28, 2026 does not print an early account closing fee. |
| U.S. Bank consumer pricing information | Effective August 10, 2026. It does not print an early closing fee. It does say an account can close on its own if the balance is zero and there is no deposit or withdrawal for four months in a row. That is the bank closing an idle account. It is not a fee for you closing a new account. |
Pages that did not open
Regions' personal quick guide PDF returned an error, so Regions is not in the table. PNC's student disclosure PDF did not yield readable text. Wells Fargo, Citi, Capital One, Ally, and Huntington were not opened for this fee. A missing row is not a statement that closing is free.
A certificate of deposit is different. Closing a CD before it matures can cost interest. That penalty is not this table.
Questions
- Does no line on the fee schedule mean the bank charges $0 to close?
- No. This page only says the schedule does not print the fee. Ask the bank, or read the account agreement, before you treat that as free.
- What does M&T print?
- M&T says an early close-out fee may apply if you close within six months of opening. The closing page does not print the amount.
- Is U.S. Bank's four month rule a closing fee?
- No. The consumer pricing information says a zero balance account with no deposit or withdrawal for four months in a row can close on its own. It does not print a dollar for that.
- Can a new account bonus still be taken back?
- A bonus offer can require the account to stay open. That rule is in the offer, not in this table. This page does not quote bonus terms.
