How to ask your bank to refund a fee
A fee refund is a request. You point at one line on the statement, you say what it is, and you ask the bank to reverse it. Some banks remove a fee. Some do not. Nothing on this page is a success rate, because no official page opened for this guide prints one.

Find the fee, not the purchase
A purchase at a store is not a bank fee. Monthly service, overdraft, non-sufficient funds, paper statement, wire, ATM, stop payment, and late fees are charges from the bank or the card issuer. They usually have their own line. In the US, start with bank fees on a US statement. In Canada, start with bank fees on a Canadian statement. Dollar amounts that named banks print are on the linked tables from those pages. If your bank is not on a table, use the fee schedule in your agreement. Do not copy a neighbor bank's number.
Write three things before you call: the date, the exact fee name printed on the statement, and the amount. Add one sentence about why you are asking. A first overdraft, a fee that hit because another fee caused a shortfall, or a package you did not think you were on are common reasons. The reason is context. It is not a rule that the bank must waive the fee.
Have the statement open. The phone number on the statement is the one to use. If you are asking about a card fee, use the number on the card or the statement, not a number from a search ad.
A short example of what to say
You can read this and fill in the blanks. "Hello. I am calling about one fee on my statement. The date is [date]. The line says [fee name]. The amount is [amount]. Please tell me what that fee was for. I am asking you to reverse it." Then stop and let them answer.
If they say yes, ask when the credit will show and whether it will be on this statement or the next one. Write the name of the person and the date. If they say no, you can ask once more: "What would need to be true for you to reverse it?" If the answer is still no, say: "Please tell me how to make a complaint, and please send the decision in writing if you can." Do not invent a policy the agent did not state. Do not read them a dollar amount from a different bank.
Asking about one fee is different from changing the account. In Canada, a package that does not match how you pay is a separate conversation from reversing a single extra transaction fee. FCAC says to ask which package is on the account if the line does not match what you thought you had. Changing the package does not automatically refund last month.
If the answer is no
In the United States, ask for the bank's complaint steps. You can also submit a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The complaint is a record. It is not a guarantee of a refund. A fee dispute is not the same process as a credit card billing error. Use the dispute page when the problem is a purchase you did not make. Use this page when the bank itself charged the fee.
In Canada, FCAC says to complain to the bank first. The bank must give a detailed written response within 56 calendar days. FCAC does not resolve that individual complaint. If you are not satisfied, you can go to the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments when 56 calendar days have passed, or sooner if the bank has already closed the file with a written response. A provincial credit union uses the provincial path. The steps are the same ones on dispute a charge in Canada.
Keep the statement, the fee name, and your notes. If a second fee was caused by the first one, mention both amounts. For a pre-authorized debit that caused a non-sufficient funds fee, FCAC says you can ask the institution to reverse those extra charges. That ask still depends on the debit rules, including the 90 calendar day window on the pre-authorized debit page.
What a refund is not
A refund of a bank fee is not a change to the interest on a credit card, and it is not a chargeback of a store purchase. It is also not automatic when you upload a statement anywhere, including here. Expenvo can list fee lines it recognizes and a yearly estimate from those lines. That estimate is not a quote from the bank and not a promise they will return the money.
Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines so you can match a short name to a date and an amount. It does not call the bank, and it does not dispute a charge. Call with the date and the amount on the screen if that is easier than flipping through a paper statement.
Questions
- Will the bank always remove a first fee?
- No. Asking is normal. The bank can say no. No page opened for this guide prints a success rate or a rule that the first fee is free.
- What do I need on the call?
- The date, the fee name printed on the statement, and the amount. Use the phone number on the statement. Ask what the fee was for, then ask them to reverse it.
- Who do I tell if they say no?
- Ask for the bank's complaint steps. In the US you can also complain to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. In Canada the bank has 56 calendar days to answer in writing, and you can then go to the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments.
- Does Expenvo get the refund?
- No. It lists the fee lines on the statement. You ask the bank.
