What PURCHASE AUTHORIZED ON means on your statement

PURCHASE AUTHORIZED ON is a debit card description, not a fee. The date printed inside that phrase is the day the purchase was approved. The date in the date column is the day the bank posted the line. Those two days are often different.

Two dates on one line

People type PURCHASE AUTHORIZED ON because those words are sitting in the description, usually followed by a month and day, then a store name. Wells Fargo's account activity help page, opened 17 October 2026, does not use that exact heading. What it does explain is the gap those words are pointing at. The merchant asks the bank to authorize an amount. Later the merchant sends the actual amount for payment. The approval day and the posting day are not the same event.

Read your own line from left to right. The column date is when the money moved on the statement. The date after "authorized on" is the earlier approval, when the store checked that the card could be used. A store name, a city, or the last digits of the card often follow. This guide does not invent a sample merchant string. Use the words on your statement.

The same idea shows up when a bank prints a recurring payment as authorized on a date. That date is still the approval date. The company name after it is who billed you. Pending and posted charges is the page for a hold that has not become a final amount yet.

What Wells Fargo prints about the wait

On the account activity page, Wells Fargo says that for most debit card purchases it receives the payment request, including the actual amount, within three business days of the transaction. If it does not receive a final payment request within three business days, or within up to thirty business days for certain debit or ATM card transactions including car rental, hotel, cash disbursements, and international transactions, it releases the authorization hold, removes the pending line, and adds the funds back to the available balance. If the payment request arrives later, the actual amount is still deducted then.

A second Wells Fargo document, the consumer debit and ATM card terms, describes the hold in calendar days. It says the bank generally releases the authorization hold within five calendar days from the authorization, or until the transaction is paid. The hold can be up to 30 business days for car rental, hotel, cash disbursements, and international card transactions. If the merchant does not submit in time, the hold is released, and the bank can still pay the transaction when it arrives. The activity page says three business days for most purchases. The card terms say five calendar days. Both are Wells Fargo's pages. Your account agreement is the one that applies to your account.

The amount can change too. Wells Fargo says the pending amount may not include a tip at a restaurant, and that hotels, salons, and car rentals often authorize a different amount from the final bill. The final amount is what posts. A pending line and a posted line are not automatically two charges.

What to do with the line

Match the store name and the authorized-on date to a receipt. The posting date can be a few days later, inside the windows above, or longer for a hotel, a rental car, cash, or an international charge. If the store name is a short code, start with unknown charge on a statement and statement codes.

This line is the purchase. A bank fee, if there is one, is a separate line, such as an overdraft fee. Wells Fargo's alerts page says that if you do not recognize a debit or credit card transaction, call the number on the back of your card. The activity page lists 1-800-869-3557 for questions about a deposit hold. Use the number on your card for a purchase you do not recognize.

Other banks use their own wording for the same kind of debit purchase. CHECKCARD and POS DEBIT is that label. Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines so you can match a short name to a date and an amount. It does not call the bank, and it does not dispute a charge.

Questions

Which date did I shop?
The date inside PURCHASE AUTHORIZED ON is the approval date. The date in the date column is when the bank posted the purchase. Wells Fargo's pages say those events can be days apart.
Why was the pending amount different?
Wells Fargo says a restaurant tip may be missing from the pending amount, and hotels, salons, and car rentals often authorize a different amount from the final bill.
Does the hold expire?
Wells Fargo's activity page says most payment requests arrive within three business days, and that some holds, including car rental, hotel, cash, and international, can run up to thirty business days. The debit card terms say the hold is generally released within five calendar days. Read your agreement.
Is this a fee?
No. It is the debit card purchase. A fee the bank charged would be its own line.
