How to waive the Laurentian Bank monthly fee
Laurentian Bank prints a monthly price for each chequing package, and it prints who can get the Basic account with no monthly fee. A rebate for students or for people 60 and older is a different offer. Asking the bank to remove a fee that already posted is still a request. They can say no.

The monthly prices on the chequing page
Laurentian Bank's chequing page, opened 17 October 2026, says the fee schedule is in force as of 12 March 2026. Unlimited is $14.75 a month and includes unlimited monthly transactions. Preferred is $7.50 a month and includes 20 monthly transactions. Basic is $4.00 a month, includes 18 monthly transactions, and the same card says no monthly fee under certain conditions. Paper statements are $3.00 a month on these packages. eStatements are free. You receive a bank statement only when you conduct more than five transactions since the last statement was printed. Maintenance fees continue.
The footnote for the no monthly fee offer says it is for seniors receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement, beneficiaries of a Registered Disability Savings Plan, newcomers during their first year in Canada, and Canadians receiving social assistance under certain provincial and territorial programs. It applies for one year when you show proof. It does not renew by itself. You renew it at a branch. That is the bank's rule for the free plan, not a promise that every Basic account is free.
The same page lists a 65+ Plan with 4 free monthly banking transactions, and it says you must be at least 65. This guide does not add a monthly dollar for that plan, because the text opened with the account list did not print one next to it. There is also a pay per use section: basic features are free when you keep a minimum $3,000 monthly balance. Under $3,000, the page prints $1.25 for an Interac Debit transaction and for a cheque, and $1.00 for several other transactions, including a pre authorized payment. Those are transaction fees, not the package's monthly fee. Do not add them to the $4.00, $7.50, or $14.75 and call the sum the monthly fee.
Rebates the other pages print
The 60+ Advantage page says if you are 60 or older, you get a rebate of $5 a month on the regular monthly fee of Preferred or Unlimited. The prices shown on that page are $2.50 a month for Preferred and $9.75 a month for Unlimited. Paper statements are $3.00 a month. Electronic statements have no charge. The fee schedule date is also 12 March 2026.
Student Advantage is for applicants 16 to 25 who are enrolled full time and show proof of enrolment. The page says a rebate of up to $9 a month on the regular monthly banking fee. The prices shown are $0 a month for Preferred and $5.75 a month for Unlimited. Paper is $3. The electronic statement has no charge. The line of credit and the credit card on that page are separate products. This guide does not treat them as the chequing fee.
Other banks' monthly dollars are on monthly chequing account fees by bank. What the words SERVICE CHARGE and MONTHLY MAINTENANCE FEE mean is on service charge or monthly maintenance fee.
What to ask
Download the statement first so you have the date and the amount. The steps are on how to download a Laurentian Bank statement. Call the number on the statement or book the branch meeting the site offers. Say which package is on the account, whether you had direct proof for the free Basic plan, and whether a student or 60+ rebate should have applied. Ask them to review the fee that posted, or to put the account on the package you qualify for.
A future waiver and a refund of last month are two requests. The one year free plan does not renew unless you renew it at a branch, so a fee that starts in month 13 can be the printed rule, not a mistake. Ask anyway if you already gave new proof and the fee still posted. The bank can say no. A short example of the call is on how to ask your bank to refund a fee.
If the answer is no, ask for Laurentian's complaint steps. Provincial rules and the federal bank complaint path are not the same. The bank tells you who handles the next step. Expenvo does not file that complaint.
Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines so you can match a short name to a date and an amount. It does not call the bank, and it does not cancel a subscription.
Questions
- What is the Laurentian monthly fee?
- As of the 12 March 2026 schedule on the chequing page, Unlimited is $14.75, Preferred is $7.50, and Basic is $4.00 a month. Basic can have no monthly fee for a year in the cases the footnote lists.
- Who gets the free Basic account?
- The footnote names GIS recipients, RDSP beneficiaries, newcomers in their first year in Canada, and people receiving certain social assistance. You show proof. It lasts one year and does not renew unless you renew it at a branch.
- Does the 60+ rebate apply automatically forever?
- The 60+ page prints a $5 monthly rebate on Preferred or Unlimited, and it shows $2.50 and $9.75. Ask the bank which package is on your account. This page does not promise the rebate posted if the account is a different plan.
