How to cancel an Interac e-Transfer
You can cancel an Interac e-Transfer only while the other person has not taken the money. After it is deposited, Interac says the transfer is final. Interac also says it does not hold the money and cannot recall it. Your bank is the place that can still act, and your bank sets any fee.

When the sender can still cancel
Interac's terms of use, opened 18 October 2026, say the sending financial institution holds the funds until you deposit them, the transfer is cancelled, or the transfer expires. Until you have tried to deposit the transfer, or it has been deposited automatically, the sender may cancel it. After that, you no longer have a right to collect it.
Autodeposit changes the clock. Interac's help page says that if the recipient is registered for Autodeposit, the money goes into the account without a security question. Interac's own explainer says you cannot cancel once the money is deposited, and that Autodeposit can deposit it automatically after routine fraud checks by the two financial institutions. If the person uses Autodeposit, the window to cancel can be short. Do not count on a full day.
The same help page says a decline is irreversible. The recipient declines from the link in the notice, after answering the security question. The sender then gets a notice and is asked to deposit the funds back into the original account. If the recipient is not registered for online banking at a participating institution, Interac says to contact the sender, who can cancel and reclaim the funds.
What happens after 30 days
If nobody picks up the transfer within 30 days, Interac's help page says the sender gets a notice that the transfer has expired, with instructions on how to reclaim the funds. You do not earn interest while the money sits in the clearing account. That sentence is in the terms.
Reclaiming an expired transfer is done through your own bank, not by emailing Interac a request to reverse a completed payment. Interac's personal FAQ says Interac does not hold funds and cannot trace them. Issues have to be reported to your financial institution. The ombudsman page says the same limit in plain words: Interac cannot directly trace, hold, recall, or cancel Interac e-Transfer funds, and it cannot decide a refund.
The fee for sending, if your package charges one, is a separate question from whether the transfer can be cancelled. Interac's fee page says Interac does not bill customers the send fee directly. The pages opened for this guide do not print a dollar for cancelling. Do not assume the cancel is free, and do not assume a fee you already paid comes back. Check the current fee schedule, or the account agreement. The overview of who sets the send fee is on Interac e-Transfer fees.
What to do if the money already moved
If the line is already on the statement, write the date, the name, and the amount. A completed transfer is not the same as a fee line. A wire is a different product, covered on wire transfer fees. A debit purchase in a store is an Interac purchase, not an e-Transfer.
If you sent money to the wrong person and it has already been deposited, contact your bank with the confirmation. Interac says a confirmation is sent when a transfer is initiated, declined, or processed, and that you should keep a copy. The terms say that if you think a confirmation is wrong, you must contact Interac no later than 30 calendar days after it was sent, or it is treated as correct. That 30 day note is about the confirmation record. It is not a promise that a deposited transfer can be undone.
A Canadian dollar account stays in C$. Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not sign in to the bank or the company, and it does not cancel a membership. How to read a statement PDF covers one file per period.
Questions
- Can I cancel an Interac e-Transfer after it is deposited?
- No. Interac's terms say that once its records show the transfer was deposited, the transfer is final. Autodeposit can deposit the money without a security question.
- What if nobody deposits it?
- Interac's help page says that if it is not picked up within 30 days, the sender is notified that it expired and is given instructions to reclaim the funds.
- Can Interac reverse it for me?
- Interac says it does not hold the funds and cannot trace, recall, or cancel them. Contact the bank that holds the account.
- Is there a cancel fee?
- The Interac pages opened on 18 October 2026 do not print a customer fee for cancelling. Your bank's fee schedule is the place to check. A send fee, if the package charges one, is a different line.
