What a legal process, garnishment, or levy fee is

A legal process fee is the bank's charge for handling an order against the account. The order can be a garnishment, a tax levy, or another freeze. The fee is not the debt itself. The agency or the court is who is collecting. The bank is charging for processing the paper. The name on the statement varies. Look for legal, levy, garnishment, or legal order next to a dollar that matches the fee schedule.

Amounts that named US banks print

First Horizon's account and service fees page, opened 19 October 2026, lists a Legal Action Processing Fee of $100 under other fees and services. That page is the consumer deposit fee table. It does not say the fee is waived for a particular checking package. A monthly account fee is a different line, on how to waive a First Horizon monthly fee.

TD Bank's US personal fee schedule, marked 5911-RET (07/26), lists Levy/legal order at $125.00. This is TD Bank in the United States, not TD Canada Trust. The line in that schedule has no footnote number of its own. State law can still limit what a bank may take. If the $125 on your statement does not match this schedule, use the copy the bank gave you with the account.

RBC Bank in the United States, which is RBC Bank (Georgia), N.A., still posts a personal schedule of fees marked R007EN (11/2021). That file lists Tax levies and garnishments at $100.00 each. The date on the file is 2021. Treat it as the schedule the site was still publishing on 19 October 2026, and confirm with the bank if your statement shows a different dollar. This is not Royal Bank of Canada in Canada.

Canada, where a dollar was not printed

TD Canada Trust's Financial Services Terms, effective 10 August 2026, say you agree to pay amounts TD incurs when it responds to any legal or administrative proceeding, notice, or demand related to the account. The List of Services and Fees effective 5 March 2026, which loaded for this guide, does not print a garnishment dollar. This page does not invent one. Ask the branch or read the fee list in your agreement.

Other large Canadian banks are not given a number here unless their own current schedule was opened and the line was on it. If your statement shows a legal fee and the public list is silent, the account agreement and the notice the bank mailed with the order are the documents that apply. Canadian bank fees is the wider reading guide.

What you can do

Write down the date, the description, and the amount. Call the number on the statement and ask which order the fee belongs to, which agency sent it, and whether the account is frozen, partly frozen, or only charged a processing fee. A freeze and a fee can both happen. They are not the same event. If you think the order names the wrong person or the wrong amount, contact the agency or the court that issued it, and tell the bank's legal order desk what you were told. The bank usually cannot cancel a valid order because you ask.

Asking the bank to waive its processing fee is a request. The bank can say no. A state or provincial rule may cap the fee or say it comes out of the money that was seized. This guide does not quote a cap the bank's own page did not print. Do not pay a company that promises to erase a levy for an upfront fee. Upload the statement on Expenvo. How to ask your bank to refund a fee is the short script for a fee the bank itself charged.

Questions

Is the legal process fee the amount that was garnished?
No. The garnishment or levy is the money the order takes. The legal process fee is the bank's charge for handling that order. Both can appear. They are different lines.
Why do the US amounts on this page differ?
First Horizon prints $100. TD Bank in the US prints $125 on the July 2026 schedule. RBC Bank in the US prints $100 on a 2021 schedule that was still posted. Your agreement can differ, and state law can limit the fee.
Does TD Canada Trust publish a garnishment dollar?
Not on the March 2026 service list that loaded. The August 2026 terms say TD can charge you when it responds to a legal demand. Ask TD for the dollar that applies to your account.
