How to get a CIBC NSF fee refunded

CIBC's personal account service fees PDF prints $10.00 each time a payment item is presented on a Canadian dollar personal deposit account. The same PDF says the fee is not charged more than once in two business days, or if the account is overdrawn by less than $10.00. Asking CIBC to reverse a fee outside those lines is a request. CIBC can say no.

The $10.00 fee and the two limits

Opened 20 October 2026. The PDF is dated 12 March 2026. Amounts here are Canadian dollars unless the line says U.S. A payment item rejected or returned because the account did not have enough money is $10.00 each time it is presented or represented on a Canadian dollar personal deposit account. A U.S. dollar personal deposit account is $5.00 U.S. A personal line of credit is $45.00. The comparison row is in Overdraft and NSF fees by bank (2026). The monthly package is on how to waive a CIBC monthly fee.

The footnote says an NSF fee will not be charged on the same deposit account more than once within two business days, or if the personal deposit account is overdrawn by less than $10.00. A merchant can present the item again. A later presentment can be charged, subject to that footnote.

CIBC Overdraft Protection is a different charge

Pay Per Use is $5.00 on any business day, based on end-of-day balances, when an overdraft is created or increased. There is no charge unless the overdraft is used. This option is not available to Quebec residents. You also pay interest on the outstanding amount.

The Monthly Fixed Fee is $5.00 at the end of every month, whether or not the overdraft was used. It is not applicable to Quebec residents. Interest is currently 21% per year and may vary. Interest is calculated and debited monthly. These are the cost of the service. They are not a printed refund of an NSF fee that already posted.

What to say to CIBC

Use the number on the statement. "Hello. I am calling about one NSF fee. The date is [date]. The amount is $10.00. Please tell me whether this was a second fee inside two business days on this account, or whether the account was overdrawn by less than $10.00. If neither is true, I am asking you to review the fee and reverse it."

Say $5.00 U.S. or $45.00 if that is the line on the statement, not the deposit-account amount. If they reverse it, ask when the credit shows. If they refuse, ask for the complaint steps. How to ask your bank to refund a fee is the version that is not tied to one bank.

What the footnote does not do

The two limits are rules about when CIBC charges the fee. The PDF opened today does not say a deposit the next day refunds an NSF fee that already posted. What a Canadian NSF fee is is the FCAC description. It does not require CIBC to remove a fee that was charged inside the PDF.
