How to get a National Bank NSF fee refunded
National Bank's fee guide for personal banking, effective 15 February 2026, prints $10.00 when a cheque, item, or payment instruction is returned or rejected for insufficient funds. A U.S. account is US $5.00. The guide does not print a two-day cap or a shortfall waiver. Asking National Bank to reverse the fee is a request.

The $10.00 processing fee
Opened 20 October 2026. The line in the fee guide is a processing fee per cheque, item, or payment instruction drawn on the account and returned or rejected due to insufficient funds. The Canadian dollar amount is $10.00. The U.S. account amount is US $5.00. The side-by-side row is Overdraft and NSF fees by bank (2026). The monthly package is on how to waive a National Bank monthly fee.
The same PDF does not print a once-in-two-business-days limit, and it does not print a rule that skips the fee when the shortfall is under $10. Those cells are not published. Do not copy them from another bank.
Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not sign in to the bank, and it does not move the money.
Overdraft on this PDF
The fee guide says no overdraft fees apply for the Personal Flex Line, the All-In-One line of credit, the Student Line of Credit, the RRSP Line of Credit, an integrated line of credit, or any other authorized account overdraft. It does not print a per-item overdraft dollar for an ordinary personal deposit account. That figure is not published here.
What to say
Use the number on the statement. "Hello. I am calling about one fee for an item returned for insufficient funds. The date is [date]. The amount is $10.00. I am asking you to review the fee and reverse it."
If the account is a U.S. account, say US $5.00. Stop and let them answer. If they say yes, ask which day the credit posts. If they say no, ask how to complain. There is no success rate on this page. How to ask your bank to refund a fee is the general script.
What this page will not invent
A cap used by another Canadian bank is not National Bank's sentence. What a Canadian NSF fee is describes the federal limit. The fee guide opened today is still the document that prints $10.00 and US $5.00, and it does not say National Bank must reverse a fee that matches those amounts.
