CD early withdrawal penalties at US banks
A CD early withdrawal penalty is what the bank takes when you take principal out of a certificate of deposit before the maturity date. Ally, Marcus, Capital One, and Chase each print the penalty as days of interest, and the day count depends on the term. A savings monthly fee is a different charge. Rates change. This page does not quote an interest rate.

What the penalty is
Opened 19 October 2026. A certificate of deposit, or CD, is an account you agree to leave alone until a set date. Closing it early, or taking principal out early, can cost interest. The federal pages these banks point to do not print one penalty for every bank. Use the row for the bank that holds the CD. A monthly fee on a savings account, which is not a CD penalty, is on monthly savings account fees.
Partial withdrawals of principal are a separate rule. Ally, Marcus, and Capital One say they generally do not allow you to take only some of the principal before maturity. Chase calculates its penalty on the amount withdrawn, and it caps that penalty at the interest earned during the current term. Read the row before you assume you can take part of the balance.

Match the product name. A no penalty CD is not the same row as a high yield CD.
| Bank and document | Penalty the page prints | What else that page says |
|---|---|---|
| Ally Bank deposit agreement | Less than 3 months: 30 days of interest. 3 months to 24 months: 60 days. 25 months to 36 months: 90 days. 37 months to 48 months: 120 days. 49 months or longer: 150 days. | The penalty uses the interest rate in effect when you ask to close the CD. Accrued interest that has not been paid is applied to the penalty first. If the penalty is larger, the rest comes out of principal. Ally generally does not allow a partial withdrawal of principal. A No Penalty CD cannot be closed until 7 calendar days after the day you first fund it. After that, you can withdraw the full balance and accrued interest without this penalty. The penalty also does not apply if any owner dies or is judged legally incapacitated, or for a withdrawal up to a required minimum distribution from an Ally IRA CD. |
| Marcus by Goldman Sachs FAQ | 1 year or less: 90 days of interest. More than 1 year to 5 years: 180 days. More than 5 years: 270 days. The interest is on the original principal, at the rate in effect for the CD. | Marcus says you cannot withdraw a portion of principal before maturity. The formula on the FAQ is the interest rate divided by 365 (366 in a leap year), times the penalty days, times the original principal. A No Penalty CD has no withdrawal fee beginning 7 days after funding, and you must withdraw the full balance. |
| Capital One 360 CD disclosures, dated 9/10/2026 | 12 months or shorter: 3 months of interest. Longer than 12 months: 6 months of interest. The page says this applies no matter when you redeem before maturity. | Capital One says it will not permit withdrawals of principal during the term, and that the full balance can be withdrawn at maturity and during the grace period. The penalty can be larger than the interest earned. If any owner dies or is declared legally incompetent, the CD can be redeemed early without the penalty. The grace period is 10 calendar days after maturity. CDs opened at Discover that have not renewed yet use a separate Capital One disclosure, also dated 9/10/2026, with the same two penalty sentences. |
| Chase personal CD page and the personal fee schedule | Less than 6 months: 90 days of interest on the amount withdrawn. 6 months to less than 24 months: 180 days. 24 months or more: 365 days. The penalty is not more than the interest earned during the current term. | If the withdrawal is less than seven days after you open the CD or after another withdrawal of principal, the penalty cannot be less than seven days of interest. Chase deducts the penalty from principal. The fee schedule says the grace period is 5 days after maturity for a term of 7 to 13 days, and 10 days after maturity for a term of 14 days or longer. During that window you can withdraw principal without the early withdrawal penalty. |
Banks left out
Wells Fargo, Discover's own marketing page, Synchrony, Barclays, and credit union CDs were not used for a penalty count. If your CD is one of those, use the agreement for that account. A missing row is not a statement that the penalty is zero.
A business CD at Chase uses a different schedule from the personal row above. This page does not copy that business schedule.
