Fees while a US checking account stays overdrawn

A per item overdraft fee is the charge for an item the bank pays while the account is short. A second kind of charge is a fee for the account staying negative after that. Wells Fargo prints no extra fee for a negative balance that lasts. U.S. Bank says overdraft paid fees can keep accruing each day the available balance stays far enough below zero. Huntington's current page does not print an extended overdraft fee.

Two different charges

Opened 19 October 2026. The fee for each item is already on US overdraft fees by bank and on multiple overdraft fees in one day. This page is only about what happens if the balance stays negative after those items post. Do not add a daily fee the bank did not print.

Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, and Huntington

The account name matters. A second checking account at the same bank can use a different rule.

Opened 19 October 2026. What each page says about a balance that stays negative.
AccountWhat the page prints about staying overdrawn
Wells Fargo Everyday CheckingThe fee summary, effective 28 July 2026, lists $35 per item, no more than three fees a business day, and this sentence: no additional overdraft fee even if you have a negative account balance over an extended period. No fee on items of $10 or less, or if both the ending daily balance and the available balance are overdrawn by $10 or less.
U.S. Bank consumer checkingThe consumer pricing information, effective 10 August 2026, lists an Overdraft Paid Fee of $36 per item when the item is $5.01 or more and the available balance at the end of the business day is overdrawn by $50.01 or more. The daily maximum is three fees. The help article says that if the available balance stays at a negative $50.01 or more, up to three overdraft paid fees may be charged each day and the fees will keep accruing each day. Overdraft Fee Forgiven waives the fees if, at 11 p.m. Eastern on the business day they are charged, the available balance is at least $0, excluding those fees and including same day deposits that qualify.
HuntingtonThe overdraft page prints a $15 overdraft fee, a $0 return fee, a limit of 3 overdraft fees a day, and no overdraft fee when the account is overdrawn by $50 or less. 24 Hour Grace gives you until midnight Central Time the next business day to bring the balance positive and avoid the fee. The same page says the account will be closed automatically if it remains negative in any amount for 60 days. It does not print a separate extended overdraft fee.

What this page does not add

Older brochures at some banks used a separate extended overdraft dollar. If the page opened on 19 October 2026 does not print that dollar, this guide does not copy it from an old file. Citi, Capital One 360, Truist, PNC, and Chase were not given a new extended fee row here. Their per item rules, including accounts that print no overdraft fee, stay on the overdraft pages linked above.

Bringing the balance back up is the practical step those pages describe. Wells Fargo's extra day, U.S. Bank's 11 p.m. Eastern review, and Huntington's midnight Central deadline are three different clocks. Use the clock on your own bank's page.
