Wire tracing and cancellation fees in Canada

A tracing fee is what the bank charges to ask where a wire went. A cancellation or amendment fee is what it charges to stop or change a wire you already sent. RBC and TD Canada Trust print dollars. BMO says an investigation fee may be collected and does not print the amount. The fee to send or receive the wire is a different line.

Tracing is not the wire fee

Opened 19 October 2026. The fee to send a wire, and the fee to receive one, are already on Canada wire transfer fees and incoming wire fees at Canadian banks. This page is the follow up: the wire is missing, wrong, or you want it stopped. Ask the bank which fee applies before they start, because a trace of a wire that arrived can cost money even when a trace of a wire that did not arrive does not.

RBC, TD, and BMO

GST on RBC's trace and cancellation lines is extra. TD's $25 line does not say GST in the cell opened here.

Opened 19 October 2026. Trace, amend, and cancel only.
BankFee the page printsWhen it applies
RBC additional account servicesInquiries and tracing: free if the outgoing payment is not delivered as instructed. If it is delivered as instructed, starting at $25.00 CAD on a Canadian dollar account, or $25.00 USD on a U.S. dollar account, plus GST. Cancellation or amendment: starting at the same $25.00, plus GST.RBC says the fee is charged for each bank that needs to be contacted, and to ask for details. Euro, pound, and Hong Kong dollar accounts have their own starting amounts on the same table.
TD Canada Trust chequing fees$25 for a wire transfer or payment amendment, cancellation, or investigation. That $25 is printed for All-Inclusive, Unlimited, Every Day, Minimum, and Student chequing accounts, and for the U.S. Daily Interest Chequing Account and the Borderless Plan. Receiving a wire is a separate $17.50. Sending one is a separate amount.
BMO everyday banking agreements, effective 2 June 2026No dollar. The footnote says an investigation fee may be collected when an investigation is requested, and to ask in the branch. The same footnote says inquiries and traces may be subject to fees other than the ones BMO collects. The $16 incoming fee and the $40 outgoing fee are not this investigation line.

Banks left out

Scotiabank, CIBC, National Bank, Desjardins, and the credit unions were not opened for a trace or cancellation dollar on this page. National Bank's outgoing wire guide already has a tracing line from an earlier check. This page does not copy that older figure. A missing row is not a free trace.

A wire that never left your account may show as a reversal instead of a trace fee. Match the dates. If the bank both returned the principal and charged the trace, those are two lines.

Questions

Does RBC charge to trace a wire that never arrived?
The additional services page says inquiries and tracing are free if the outgoing payment is not delivered as instructed. If it was delivered as instructed, the fee starts at $25.00 plus GST, for each bank that needs to be contacted.
What does TD charge to cancel or amend a wire?
The chequing fee table opened on 19 October 2026 prints $25 for a wire amendment, cancellation, or investigation on the named personal accounts. That is not the $17.50 receiving fee and not the sending fee.
Does BMO print an investigation dollar?
The everyday banking guide effective 2 June 2026 says an investigation fee may be collected and tells you to ask in the branch. It does not print the dollar. This page does not invent one.
