How to get a USAA overdraft fee refunded
USAA calls this the Overdraft Fee Refund Window. The $29 overdraft fee posts the business day after the overdraft item. A deposit that arrives in that window can get the fee refunded, but only if the available balance ends at negative $100 or better, not counting the fee itself. A deposit that is too small does not qualify.

When the fee posts
Opened 19 October 2026. The USAA Federal Savings Bank depository agreement says an overdraft fee is charged the business day after the overdraft item posts. If the item posts on Monday, and Tuesday is not a federal holiday, the fee is charged on Tuesday. The posting date is what you usually see in the USAA app or on usaa.com. The dollar, and when USAA charges it at all, is on USAA Classic Checking fees.
This is USAA's own window. It is not a promise that every bank refunds an overdraft fee. A general way to ask is on how to ask your bank to refund a fee.

What counts as a qualifying deposit
All four of these have to be true.
Timing. The deposit has to arrive before the deposit cutoff on the business day after the overdraft item posts. The agreement's example is a Monday post, with the deposit in before 9 p.m. on Tuesday, or earlier if an earlier cutoff applies. Cutoff times are in the funds availability part of the same agreement.
Amount. After every item has processed at the end of that next business day, except the overdraft fee that might be refunded, the available balance has to be at least negative $100. Overdrawn by more than $100 does not qualify. Items can still hit the account during end of day processing that you do not see in the app until later. Keep your own list of checks and payments you already authorized.
Available funds. Money on hold does not count. The agreement's example is a $500 mobile check deposit with a $400 hold. Only $100 is available for the refund test.
Type of deposit. The agreement says deposits generally qualify, including mobile check deposits, electronic direct deposits, transfers, ATM deposits, and in person deposits. You can make more than one. Not every deposit is available right away. An overdraft protection transfer that happens during end of day processing also qualifies.
The agreement's own example
Tuesday starts at an available balance of $100. USAA pays a $300 item. The day ends at negative $200.
Wednesday, before 9 p.m. Central Time, a $100 transfer of available funds arrives. That would leave the account at negative $100. During end of day processing, a $50 check is also paid. The available balance, not counting the overdraft fee, is negative $150. The $29 fee for Tuesday's item is charged on Wednesday.
That Tuesday fee is not refunded. Negative $150 is worse than negative $100. The agreement says the qualifying deposits had to total at least $150. On Thursday, a separate $29 fee can be charged for Wednesday's $50 check. That later fee has its own window.
What this does not do
The window refunds an overdraft fee USAA already decided to charge. It does not stop the fee from posting first. It does not apply to an item USAA declines. One time debit card purchases, ATM withdrawals, and Zelle transactions are declined when the available balance is not enough, and the checking page says an overdraft fee does not apply to a declined item. Asking USAA to refund a fee outside this window is a separate request, and USAA can say no.
Questions
- When does the USAA overdraft fee post?
- The agreement says the fee is charged the business day after the overdraft item posts. A Monday item is charged on Tuesday if Tuesday is not a federal holiday.
- How much do I have to deposit to get the fee back?
- Enough available money that, after every other item that day, the available balance is at least negative $100, not counting the fee itself. In the agreement's example, a $100 deposit was not enough because the day ended at negative $150.
- Does a deposit on hold count?
- No. Only funds that are available for use count. A hold on a mobile check deposit means only the available part of that deposit counts.
