What an Adyen charge means

An Adyen charge is a card payment. The text on the statement is the shop name Adyen sends, up to 22 characters, plus the city and the country or region.

What Adyen says the shopper sees

Opened 20 October 2026. Adyen's transaction description page says the text on a bank statement is the transaction description, also called a statement descriptor, a shopper statement, or a billing descriptor. Without extra customization, it is the account name, combined with the city and the country or region from the merchant address. The city and country or region are always added, even when the description is customized.

The description itself can be at most 22 characters including spaces. Anything longer is cut off. What remains is sent with the city and the country or region. The merchant can set a doing business as name, a note for that one payment, or the doing business as name followed by that note. If the per payment note is turned off, it does not appear. Adyen says the description should contain the brand or the merchant name the cardholder would recognize. The page does not print a required prefix such as ADYEN*.

Interac is on Adyen's list of card methods that can use a customized description, along with Visa, Mastercard, and others. That is the Canada relevant part of the same page. It does not print a different sentence for a Canadian card. A US Visa charge and a Canadian Interac charge can both show the shop name, the city, and the country or region.

How to match it to a purchase

Read the shop name, then the city. Search email for that shop name and for the amount. The city is the merchant address city Adyen adds. It may be the city of the company, not the city where you stood.

A short legal name inside 22 characters is a common reason the line looks unfamiliar. Search that short name. The receipt from the shop often uses the longer brand.

A family member or a saved card can be a real purchase. Match the date and the amount before you call it fraud.

If you do not recognize it

If the date and the amount do not match a receipt, an email, or a purchase someone on the card made, it may be a charge you did not allow. In the United States, use dispute a charge in the US. In Canada, use dispute a charge in Canada. A name you still cannot place is on unknown charge on a statement. The code list is on statement codes.

Another processor that limits the descriptor to 22 characters is Stripe. Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines so you can match a short name to a date and an amount. It does not call the bank, and it does not dispute a charge.

Questions

Does Adyen print ADYEN* on the statement?
No. The transaction description page does not print that prefix. It says the line is the shop name, then the city and the country or region.
Why is the shop name so short?
Adyen says the description can be at most 22 characters including spaces. Anything longer is cut off before the city and country or region are added.
Can an Interac payment show an Adyen description?
Interac is on Adyen's list of methods that can use the customized description. The page does not print a separate Canada prefix.
Who disputes an Adyen charge?
The card issuer, after you cannot match the shop name, the date, and the amount. Adyen's page is written for the merchant who sets the description.
