What a Moneris charge means
A Moneris charge is a card payment processed by Moneris. The line is the shop's business name, a slash, and a short description, and those pieces together may not be longer than 22 characters.

What the line is
Opened 20 October 2026. Moneris's Create Payment page says a merchant can send a dynamic descriptor, a description for that one transaction that will appear on the credit card statement. Depending on the card issuer, the statement typically shows that description appended to the merchant's existing business name, separated by a slash. The business name, the slash, and the description together may not exceed 22 characters.
That page does not print a required prefix such as MONERIS*. The words you can use are the shop name and the short note after the slash. A card issuer can still shorten or rearrange them. Read the whole line, not only the first word.
Moneris's merchant operating manual tells the business to make the name on the cardholder statement match the storefront, and for an online sale to match the website. The website is supposed to show the business name and the name that will appear on the statement. If the line is a legal name you do not remember, search that name. It can still be a shop you visited.
How to match it to a purchase
Copy the text before and after the slash. Search email for that shop name and for the amount. A receipt from the till often uses the name on the door. The statement uses the shorter descriptor.
Moneris is widely used by shops in Canada. A US card can still show this shape when the shop's processor is Moneris. The Create Payment page does not print a separate US prefix. Use the shop name on the line in either country.
A family member or a saved card can be a real purchase. Match the date and the amount before you call it fraud.
If you do not recognize it
If the date and the amount do not match a receipt, an email, or a purchase someone on the card made, it may be a charge you did not allow. In the United States, use dispute a charge in the US. In Canada, use dispute a charge in Canada. A name you still cannot place is on unknown charge on a statement. The code list is on statement codes.
A similar shop line from a different processor is on Clover. Upload the statement on Expenvo. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines so you can match a short name to a date and an amount. It does not call the bank, and it does not dispute a charge.
Questions
- Does Moneris print MONERIS* on the statement?
- No. The Create Payment page does not print that prefix. It says the statement typically shows the shop's business name, a slash, and a short description.
- How long can the Moneris line be?
- Moneris says the business name, the slash, and the dynamic descriptor together may not exceed 22 characters. The card issuer can still show less.
- Is a Moneris line only a Canadian card?
- Moneris describes the same statement shape for the credit card charge. A US card can show it when the shop uses Moneris. The page does not print a second prefix for the US.
- Who do I dispute it with?
- Match the shop name and the amount first. If nobody allowed the charge, dispute it with the card issuer. The US and Canada dispute pages on this site are the steps.
