Fifth Third overdraft fee

Fifth Third prints the overdraft dollar in its consumer welcome kit, not on the Momentum Checking monthly-fee page. This page is that dollar, Extra Time, and the accounts that do not pay it. The monthly fee is on [how to waive the monthly fee at Fifth Third](/guides/waive-fifth-third-monthly-fee). The wider table is [US overdraft fees by bank](/guides/us-overdraft-fees-by-bank).

The $35 fee

Opened 21 October 2026. The figures are from Fifth Third's consumer banking welcome kit (PDF). The fee chart in that file is marked issue date 25 June 2026, and the file itself is marked 6/2026. It applies to consumer checking and savings accounts.

The overdraft fee is $35 per item for each occurrence. Fifth Third charges at most 3 overdraft fees per account per business day. There is no overdraft fee on an individual item of $5 or less. There are no per-item fees when the account is overdrawn by $5 or less at the end of the business day. The returned item fee is $0. Fifth Third says you are not charged a fee if it returns your checks and payments unpaid.

Overdraft protection transfers are free. If the account you linked does not have enough money, is restricted, or is on hold, the transfer may not happen and the overdraft fee can still be charged. A transfer from a credit card uses that card's cash advance limit and cash advance rate. A transfer from a line of credit uses that line's interest rate.

The line on your own statement is the one that counts. Upload it on the upload page. The PDF stays on your device. Expenvo lists the lines. It does not call the institution.

Extra Time and the first 90 days

The same kit says Extra Time gives you until 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the business day after the account is overdrawn to make a deposit that brings the balance to at least $0. You have to cover the items that caused the overdraft plus outstanding checks, automatic payments, and pending debit card purchases that may be presented that business day. Extra Time applies only to items Fifth Third pays with Overdraft Coverage. It does not apply to returned items. If the deposit is late or too small, the per-item overdraft fees can still be charged. The notice is in online banking. The phone on that footnote is 800-972-3030.

New Fifth Third Momentum Checking and Fifth Third Preferred Checking accounts are not charged overdraft fees for transactions posted in the first 90 days after opening. Fifth Third still says payment of an overdraft is discretionary. Express Banking is the account that prints no overdraft fees and no Overdraft Coverage. A posting that overdraws Express Banking is not charged a fee, and a debit authorization that would make the balance negative is rejected.
