Huntington overdraft fee and 24-Hour Grace

Huntington's overdraft page is separate from Asterisk-Free Checking. The overdraft fee is $15. A return is $0. 24-Hour Grace and the $50 Safety Zone are how Huntington says you avoid the fee. The monthly fee is on [Huntington Asterisk-Free Checking](/guides/waive-huntington-monthly-fee). The wider table is [US overdraft fees by bank](/guides/us-overdraft-fees-by-bank).

The $15 fee and a $0 return

Opened 21 October 2026. The figures are from Huntington's page Overdrafts and Returns Explained. The cost table prints $15 if Huntington pays a transaction when the account does not have enough money. A return, when Huntington does not pay the item, is $0. The footnote says the limit is 3 overdraft fees a day, and there is no overdraft fee when the account is overdrawn by $50 or less. That $50 band is the $50 Safety Zone.

Huntington says it pays overdrafts at its discretion and does not guarantee it will authorize and pay every transaction. If a debit card purchase is declined, Huntington says you will not receive an overdraft fee.

24-Hour Grace

24-Hour Grace gives you until midnight Central Time the next business day to deposit or transfer enough to bring the account positive, including new transactions being processed that day, and avoid the overdraft fee. Huntington will not charge an overdraft fee unless the account is overdrawn by more than $50. For a return, the same deadline is used to cover possible returned transactions plus new transactions that day. If the deposit is not there, the item can be returned and the merchant may charge its own fee.

The example on the page: you start with $50 and spend $75, so the balance is -$25. The $50 Safety Zone means no overdraft fee, because the account is overdrawn by $50 or less. If you opted out of debit overdrafts, that purchase is declined instead. A spend of $150 from the same $50 leaves the balance at -$100. You then have until midnight Central Time the next business day to bring the balance positive and have the overdraft fees waived.

A linked savings or money market transfer is in increments of $100, and the transfer fee is $0. A personal credit line transfer is also in increments of $100, up to the available credit, at that line's APR. Standby Cash, if you qualify, is a separate line from $100 to $750. The page says you pay a 5% cash advance fee when you transfer from Standby Cash. Overdraft protection can be added at a branch or by calling 800-480-2265. Overdraft options can be changed by calling 800-445-3658, 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily, or in a branch.

Huntington says an account that stays negative for 60 days, including inside the $50 Safety Zone, will be closed.

Questions

How much is a Huntington overdraft fee?
The overdrafts page prints $15 if Huntington pays the item, with at most 3 overdraft fees a day. A returned item is $0. There is no overdraft fee when the account is overdrawn by $50 or less.
How does 24-Hour Grace work?
You have until midnight Central Time the next business day to bring the account positive, including new transactions that day. If you do, Huntington waives the overdraft fees. The $50 Safety Zone already skips the fee when the overdraft is $50 or less.
Does a declined debit card purchase cost $15?
No. Huntington says a declined debit card purchase is not charged an overdraft fee. Opting out of ATM and debit overdrafts means those transactions are usually declined when the money is not there.
