The $36 fee

Opened 21 October 2026. The dollar is from the SouthState personal account fee schedule, effective 1 September 2026. The overdraft paid item fee is $36.00. The schedule says an overdraft item may be created by check or draft, an in-person withdrawal, an ACH item, or other electronic means, and that checks are paid in numerical order on the day received.

The Courtesy Overdraft Privilege disclosure says eligible checking accounts are enrolled automatically. The bank may pay checks, ACH debits, represented items, in-person withdrawals, recurring debit card transactions, and certain other electronic transactions. ATM and everyday debit card transactions are not covered unless you opt in. The disclosure says you are assessed $36.00 each time an item is presented or represented and causes the account to be overdrawn.

How to avoid it

The disclosure says the account is not charged an overdraft paid item fee if it is not overdrawn by more than $10.00. The combined cap is five fees a day. A represented item can be charged again, because the fee applies each time an item is presented or represented and overdraws the account.

Direct Checking does not offer Courtesy Overdraft Privilege. The checking comparison says transactions are declined or returned when the money is not there, and an overdrawn Direct Checking account is not charged an overdraft paid item fee. You can also decline Courtesy Overdraft Privilege on an eligible account. The fee schedule says to ask a local branch if a line on the table is unclear. It does not print one customer service phone for this fee.
