Synovus overdraft fee

The $36 fee
Opened 21 October 2026. The figures are from the Synovus personal banking schedule of fees and charges, effective 2 January 2026. Overdrafts are $36 per occurrence on all other accounts, and $29 on military accounts. The footnote says military includes grandfathered Military Checking and Military Interest Checking. The same footnote says this fee does not apply to Budget Checking.
The schedule says the fee is charged when a transaction posts and is paid, and the balance goes negative. Under standard overdraft practices, a fee may be imposed for checks, ACH, and recurring check card transactions. Accounts enrolled in Overdraft Privilege Extended Coverage can also be charged for everyday check card and ATM transactions. The account information line on that PDF is 888-796-6887.

How to avoid it
The schedule says Synovus will not charge an overdraft fee when the account is overdrawn by a total of $5 or less. If the account is enrolled in Overdraft Privilege, standard or extended, the cutoff is $50 or less. It also limits the account to three overdraft fees in one day.
Overdraft Protection Transfer is a separate row and prints no charge. The overdraft coverage page says you can discontinue Overdraft Privilege by calling (877) 803-4810 and pressing option 0. If you do, items that would overdraw the account by more than $5 may be declined or returned. Budget Checking is the account the fee schedule leaves out of this fee.
